With Wings as Eagles
by Ellen Rice
I've leaned on this Bible verse for many years, but I don't think I fully understood its message until one day about a decade ago on a distant mountaintop a deeper meaning was demonstrated.
Walking with my aunt and uncle around Mirror Lake, a 137-acre lake that is 14,000 feet above sea level nestle on and among higher mountains, I heard, then observed an eagle launching itself from a tall pine on the edge of the trail I was walking.
He was close enough that I could hear the sound of the wind ruffling through his feathers as he beat his wings and began mounting the sky. After a few moments he stopped beating them, and rather than gliding downward, he rose higher and higher, as though carried by an unseen power.
As I continued to watch, he soared still higher without flapping his wings once, reaching heights far above a distant mountain on the other side of the lake.
My uncle explained that once its efforts got him high enough the eagle was riding thermal air currents.
When we feel as though our troubles are insurmountable, that we don't have the strength or energy or knowhow to rise above them, the deeper meaning of Isaiah 40:13 can help. Mount up - turn your thoughts higher - and allow the invisible currents of He who created the wind itself, to carry you above and beyond the mountains of even the most difficult human struggles.
I pray this message blesses you.
