Watch Bird

The iconic symbol of summer in Bethany Beach has to be a seagull perched on the Bethany boardwalk clock, accompanied by the smell of hot, vinegar-soaked French fries, caramel corn and salt air.
I painted “Watch Bird” to give people something they could take home that is a happy, lasting reminder of all the good times they’ve enjoyed at the beach ~ even in the dead of winter. I’ve been asked numerous times why the clock says 12:12, and if there is a reason I painted that time in particular. Well, there is, but it’s not because the numbers had a special meaning for me, at least not then. It’s because I worked from a couple of reference photos and the one whose lighting I liked best for the clock’s face said 2:12 ~ but I didn’t want my painting to be that far into the afternoon. I wanted it to be close to the noon hour, with most of the day ahead for munching on those fries, sunbathing and having fun in the ocean. After being asked that question a lot of times, I Googled the number 1212 to see if it has special meaning, and it turns out that in the world of numerology it does. Its repetition of the numbers 1, 2, 1, 2 portend “good things ahead.” Perfect! So, every time you look at this painting I hope Watch Bird reminds you not only of good times you’ve had, but many more good times to come! Ellen |
