Spring Promise was inspired by a client's desire to show his great love for his wife on their 50th anniversary by presenting her with one hand made or hand painted work of art featuring her favorite bird for every year they were married.
He began commissioning artists more than a year ahead of the anniversary and on their anniversary presented her with an array of creations made by the many artists whose works they collected together over the years. This commission warmed my heart and I wanted to make it special. The snow flakes in Spring Promise are intentionally big fluffy ones, the kind that are wet, make great snow balls, and look pretty -- but melt when they hit the ground! What drew me to painting my friend's bluebird like this is the promise the image speaks of -- snow covered cherry buds beginning to unfold and the arrival of a bluebird scout, both signaling the beginning of spring and warmer weather. Have you ever noticed, that as soon as a leaf drops, there's a bud in place on the branch before winter has drawn it's first frosty breath? Maybe trees have something we all need more of right now -- faith that better times will come. They will. Ellen |
