Shadows and Sand
Heaven is taking pause on a solitary dune path leading to the ocean
Shadows and Sand
by Ellen Rice
"Shadows and Sand" was painted in oils from countless memories and a couple of cell pics I took one late afternoon as the sun was getting lower over the bay to the west and shadows were starting to be cast by the dunes, the only barrier between the ocean and the bay in Delaware Seashore State Park.
Though this is in my home state, it could be almost anywhere along the Mid-Atlantic and southeastern Atlantic coast of the United States. My memories of beaches and dunes go back to other places, one of them, Myrtle Beach in my early childhood, looked much like this. That was obviously a long time ago. At that time there were only miles of open beach, a restaurant and a gigantic ferris wheel I was terrified of but rode with my grandfather nonetheless.
I love the rhythm of the dunes in this painting. Have you ever noticed that dune formations are similar to waves? They're formed by the same elements, wind and water, only the process is far slower. The exception is during storms, when on this particular Delaware beach the dunes are fairly often breached and the ocean and bay meet for awhile, covering the coastal highway in between until man comes along with bulldozers and beach replenishment projects to restore it all for beach lovers' , fishermen and surfers' enjoyment.
I hope this painting brings you pleasant memories of those leisurely summertime activities. Enjoy!
