Reawakening
An oil depiction of one early morning at Indian River Inlet, Delaware
Please note, colors are best seen in natural light in person. You are invited to see it at the studio.
For 10 years off and on I worked on an oil painting that is almost as tall as I am, working to capture the essence of a luminous split second in time that to me is symbolic of so much more. Just as the sky changes continually, the intricacies of this painting changed, moving this way and that with my brush.
Physically, Reawakening is a 60" x 36" oil painting on canvas portraying the dance of light and colors on clouds and water during a split second in time over the north side of Indian River Inlet, Delaware, a spot in the world with countless mysteries and stories to tell, also the playground of fishermen, surfers and sunbathers.
Spiritually to me, Reawakening's interplay of lights and darks illustrate how no matter how many clouds surround you, light overpowers darkness and can turn them into a thing of beauty.
I have lived in Delaware since I was a teen, by the coast most of those years, walking this beach countless times, witnessing untold, everchanging sunrises and sunsets. They all fill me with awe, this one made me suck in my breath.
Whatever light touched was bathed and edged in gold. I felt as though Heaven was opening up before me. This is what I wanted to portray for others to see and feel as I painted Reawakening.
