'The Call of the Morning Light'
When sunrise beckons, answer the call . . .
'The Call of the Morning Light'
by Ellen Rice
This painting was inspired by a successful young man's gratitude for his professional mentor.
He found my artwork online and was inspired to inquire if I would be willing to paint a scene he'd captured with his cell phone while visiting his mentor's oceanfront home in Delaware last summer. More than the beauty of the photo, the story of why he wanted a painting of this scene is what hooked me.
An incredibly busy businessman, we worked together almost entirely online, though we did meet whenever he could get here from the metro D.C area.
I love the way the sun calls you to explore the scene from boardwalk and across dunes to the ocean and the light refracting through the clouds with blazing color near the horizen, then gradually moving upward and outward, edging clouds and eventually reaching even the highest clouds with a warm glow.
I enjoyed bringing the foreground to life, drawing viewers down the boardwalk with the sun's glow pulling your forward. Surrounded by grasses, pine shrubs and sand, the light on the planks warms a path toward the ocean. As I painted, I could almost hear the sounds of the ocean, the gently lapping surf, the distant cries of sea birds and feel the moist, salty air. The glow on the top of the metal and cable railings further pulls us into the scene as the rails reflect the oranges and blues of the sunrise.
When you're near the ocean and sunrise beckons, it's worth answering the call.
I hope you enjoy The Call of the Morning Light and that it awakens in you, too, memories of pleasant mornings by the shore.
