This summer I decided to paint a selection 25 "smalls gems" from my thousands of "saved for future paintings" photo references to celebrate my gallery's 25th anniversary, releasing one about every two or three weeks.
I'm painting this one - not my usual shore scenery - for the pure joy of painting something I love. Monarchs have been special to me for a long time, for several reasons.
My late aunt and Godmother used to say that when she passed if she could come back, she'd want to come back as a Monarch butterfly. She dealt with a crippling back problem most of her life, doing her best to overcome and surpass what was expected possible for her - and largely succeeding. But I think what she was thinking about when she said that was how free butterflies are, and how Monarchs especially travel great distances each year so freely. Every time I see one, I think of her, one of the most beautiful, kind, spiritual people in my life.
The model for this oil painting was a visitor to the zinnias in the flower troughs on my front deck. I'm painting it in oils on an 8" x 8" gallery wrapped portrait grade canvas. It's still in progress, and I'm not sure what color I'm going to paint the flowers .... but it is available here in the dropdown menu below if a collector who shares my love for butterflies wishes to purchase it early!
