This summer I decided to paint a selection 25 "smalls gems" from my thousands of "saved for future paintings" photo references to celebrate my gallery's 25th anniversary, releasing one about every two or three weeks.
Several weeks ago a collector who read about the Celebration Series commemorating my studio & gallery's 25th anniversary year, asked if she could reserve one of the Celebration paintings in advance. I sent her photo references I was considering for future paintings in the series, and she showed me her favorites, then offered for me to use a couple she had taken.
This painting in progress is inspired by one of the photos she sent me, which surpassed anything I have taken of the National Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse at Cape Henlopen, Lewes, Delaware, and the lighting is the kind of challenge I love!
You're seeing a very early stage of underpainting colors and the loose blue watercolor pencil sketch I did for the general layout. My finished portrayal, a 6" x 9" oil on canvas, will be posted here in the next few weeks.
All of the Celebration Series paintings are signed on the front and also titled and numbered with the words Ellen Rice Studio & Gallery Celebration Series on the back of the painting's stretcher bars.
Shipping of these small originals is via fully insured FedEx.
