A great creature waiting for its supper..."All Creatures Great and Small" 24" x 18" oil on Italian linen, in final stages of progress.

At left, in progress during the late afternoon of 3/24, is"All Creatures Great and Small," an oil on linen, of a beautiful Great White Egret in the James Farm Ecological Preserve exhibiting special "Wedding Veil" plumage.
This photo's colors are not accurate, but gives viewers an general idea of the feel of this painting. I will get my Nikon out after the last brushstrokes. Final touches will be detailing the legs and feet and finishing the tree and the seasonal tail feathers. The long feathers trailing behind and blowing in front of the egret are aigrettes. Male and female Great White Egrets grow aigrettes during mating season and can put on displays similar to peacocks, though not as large or full. Aigrettes at one time were extremely popular as decorations for women's hats - the reason Egrets almost went extinct in the last century. I took the reference photos for this egret in the James Farm Ecological Preserve next to my home and studio on the outskirts of Ocean View, Delaware, a mile in from the Atlantic Ocean. Amazingly, I was able to get fairly close as it surveyed the marshes from its lofty perch, searching for its next meal.... maybe 12 feet or so away from me. |

When I first started working on this painting, a studio visitor, a Catholic nun, said "I feel like Heaven is opening up before me." This is what I felt, too, and endeavored to bring out with it every day I worked on this painting. ~ Ellen

I love the beach when it's deserted. I wanted onlookers to feel like they could walk on forever in this painting. ~ Ellen
